Was Blade Runner based on a book and are there any sequels?
Yes, it was based on "Do Androids Dream of Electric
Sheep" (DADoES), by Philip K. Dick. He did not write
any sequels as such, but several of his other books do explore
some of the same themes. Do remember that Blade Runner was
"inspired" by DADoES more than a straight book-to-movie.
The principal themes are the same, but there are many significant
differences as well. If you have never read any PKD stories,
then it is time you started!
There is also a comic version of the film, (with a number
of differences). I'll scan it in one day for presentation
on this site.
There are some "sequels" written by K. W. Jeter.
He was authorised to write these sequels, which make some
attempt at tying together the disparate threads of DADoES
and BR. Many BR fans think very little of these books.
Note: For your convenience, I have added
links to Amazon.co.uk
- and Amazon.com
where you can find further information and reviews about each
of thesebooks. A few might not be available at one or other
place and thus the corresponding link will be dead. Pictures
may not always be the same on UK and US covers.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep
The book that inspired the movie. Different to the movie,
but a brilliant book in its own right.

Blade Runner: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep
Same story, movie cover.

The Blade Runner Comic
This is the single issue version of the above. Again, available
at auction sites like eBay, or comic collector stores. Basically
the same story as the film, but with some interesting variations.
The comic is now on-line
right here on BRmovie!

Blade Runner - A Story of the Future
Paperback - "Illustrated with More Than 60 Color Photographs,
Based on the Movie Starring Harrison Ford". Story adaptation
by Les Martin and published in 1982, this is very much like
the film, with slight variations. A fascinating story and
great photos, if you want a copy, your best bet is eBay.
One day I might scan in my copy, but that would mean breaking
the book's spine - and for a BR collectible, that is a serious
thing ...

Blade
Runner 2: The Edge of Human
K. W. Jeter attempts to join the threads of DADoES together
with those of Blade Runner and gets carried away with himself.
Many BR fans actually hate these books. Jeter himself does
not help matters when he is so deprecating towards BR fans.
Just because he was a friend of Dick's doesn't mean he can
write like Dick.

Blade
Runner 3: Replicant Night
More Jeter BR. The story is quite silly and rehashes a lot
of old stuff.
Some of Jeter's original stories are not bad. It makes one
wonder why he doesn't write more original stuff instead of
languishing so much in the Blade Runner, Star Wars and Star
Trek universes.

|
Blade Runner 4: Eye and Talon
Jeter keeps on writing them.

Blade Runner: A Movie
Warning: This is not a Blade Runner book. This is the book
title that inspired the name. Just thought you might be interested.
The story itself is a little disjointed and opinions on it
tend to be polarised.
Actually, this book is a rewrite of a book by Alan Nourse,
also carrying the name Bladerunner! (Now out of print.)
